• Students read a carefully selected sequence of classic chapter books, including Charlotte’s Web, The Courage of Sarah Noble, A Bear Called Paddington, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, Little House in the Big Woods, and Homer Price.
  
• Readings are accompanied by discussion, comprehension questions, and Memoria Press literature guides that deepen vocabulary, reading fluency, and critical thought.
  
• Poetry memorization and recitation cultivate attention, expression, and love for beauty in language.

• Weekly in-class compositions are written and illustrated in Composition & Sketch Books.
  
• Spelling lessons move from phonics-based word families to irregular plurals, contractions, and rules for accuracy in writing.
  
• Grammar includes parts of speech, subjects and predicates, punctuation, and sentence variety and diagramming.
  
• Students begin Classical Composition, based on the ancient progymnasmata, introducing skills in narration, description, and refutation that will later culminate in full rhetorical training.

• Students achieve fluency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts, with consistent practice in word problems, fractions, money, and measurement.
  
• Skills progress to multi-digit operations, regrouping, and solving increasingly complex problems.
  
• Arithmetic is emphasized as the foundation of mathematics—concrete, finite, and accessible to young minds—while preparing students for higher mathematics in Middle and Upper School.
