Early Grammar School

K-2

Early mastery in phonics, spelling, arithmetic, and habits of careful attention.

The Primary years at TPS are where children secure literacy and numeracy foundations while developing the discipline of careful, beautiful work. Students learn to read and write with clarity, gain early fluency in arithmetic, and experience the joy of stories, songs, and discovery.

Key Academic Focus

  • Phonics & Reading:

    • Kindergarten uses First Start Reading, teaching pencil grip, manuscript form, consonant/short vowel sounds, blending, and early decoding.
    • In 1st and 2nd grades, students progress into Traditional Spelling and begin reading whole books (not basal readers), such as Little Bear, Caps for Sale, The Story About Ping, Billy and Blaze, The Courage of Sarah Noble, Little House in the Big Woods, and Mr. Popper’s Penguins.
    • Daily oral reading and teacher-guided comprehension checks ensure accuracy and fluency.

  • Spelling, Printing, & Writing:

    • Copybook exercises (Scripture, poetry, maxims) instill spelling, punctuation, and penmanship.
    • 1st and 2nd graders begin New American Cursive while continuing manuscript, preparing for full cursive in Grammar School.

  • Arithmetic:
    • Focus on number sense, counting, and arithmetic facts through 18.
    • Skills include time, calendar, measurement, money, and early multiplication (1×, 2×, 5×, 10× facts).
    • Skip-counting, drills, and games strengthen mastery and recall.

  • Content Studies (Geography, History, Science):
    • Weekly Read-Aloud Program provides language-rich exposure to history, geography, science, and culture.
    • Kindergarten–2nd grade students learn continents, oceans, major countries, and in 2nd grade, U.S. states and capitals.
    • Science covers seasons, weather, flora, fauna, and nature walks for observation and collection.

  • Christian Studies, Music, and Art:

Litchfield Christian School has been such a beautiful blessing to our family. LCS is a Christ-centered school that challenges students academically, nurtures their creativity, promotes a positive learning environment, and contributes to their spiritual growth. LCS is very supportive, and they encourage their students and their families. Our daughter came into LCS completely broken and empty. Public school had taken a drastic toll on her mental health. She had pleaded with us for over a year to homeschool her. We were at a loss. Our daughter is a very social person, and we knew she needed more. We decided to check out LCS as an alternative. From the very moment we stepped inside LCS, we could see and feel the genuine love. EVERYONE felt as if they belonged. Before our day of observing was over, she had asked if she could please come to LCS. She was smiling and said this place is my kind of place. It's definitely been just that!

Today she is thriving, and she is truly enjoying herself. She loves to go to school, and she loves all of the teachers. She has made good friends and is blossoming in all areas of life. She's even started singing on stage during chapel. This has been the best decision we could have ever made as parents for our daughter. We are incredibly thankful for this opportunity in our hometown, and we truly appreciate that LCS offers grades K-12. How blessed we are to be a part of Litchfield Christian School. We look forward to many more amazing years here.
